An overnight stay in Cornwall

About ninety years ago, on a cliffside in Cornwall, a lady built a theatre. The Minack Theatre is a favourite place of mine. On a sunny day you can convince yourself that you’re in Greece or Italy.

Unfortunately for us, it was not a sunny evening the night of our tickets. I think we managed to pick the only rainy night of the week!

We bought traditional Cornish pasties for dinner, followed by hot chocolates and cake.

The rainy weather was appropriate for the play we were seeing - The Tempest. I am studying it this coming year for my university course and Shakespeare is always best seen so I try and find a production of each play I study.

The cast was fantastic performing in the rain and managing to get everyone laughing despite the miserable weather. I really enjoyed the experience.

If rain is forecast:

  • Take something to sit on - we took a large blanket, folded up. This is a good idea even if rain isn’t forecast. It can get cold and the stone is cold to sit on.

  • Wrap up warm - I wore a hoodie designed for cold weather under my raincoat. I’m someone who feels the cold and I stayed toasty all night.

  • Take something for over your legs - it’s easy to remember to wear a raincoat but the extra waterproof coat we brought to cover our laps was essential. It kept us warm (and relatively dry) on the rainy evening.

The next day we visited Padstow, a smaller harbour town that is a favourite of friends of ours.

We stopped for lunch at Cherry Trees, the members of staff were fantastic and we were impressed by the gluten-free selection.

While in Padstow we were on a mission to find rhubarb and custard pasties - I was skeptical but really enjoyed it.

And of course, you can’t go to the seaside without buying an icecream cone!
